Muybridge at the MOMA!

Over spring break, I visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. While I was there there just happened to be an exhibit featuring Eadweard Muybridge however I did not know this when we decided to visit the museum. If you don't remember, Muybridge was a pioneer in creating motion with still film and took many photos of animals and people alike. We looked at several of his photos in class. I was very excited that I got to see most of his work (the museum had the majority of his professional work) and thought you would all like to know about my experience. It was awesome to hear about his work and then witness it in person!

Shadows

Light is essential to photography. Without it, it wouldn't be possible. Light can reveal and illuminate a subject, create texture, or flatten an object. But how often do we pay attention to the opposite of light? Just as important as light, is shadow. Paying attention to where the light is falling and what kind of shadows it is creating is equally as meaningful as the quality of the light.

Pay attention to the direction of light in relation to your subject. Where do the shadows fall? They are just as important as the parts of your image that are lit. Shadows and highlights can become shapes in a composition.

Your mission is to make a photograph where shadows are the subject. Look for dynamic lighting and play with your positioning to create the most interesting composition you can. Then, post your black and white image here.
